Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional
injury-related death for children between the age of 1 and 14. (CDC,

Of those deaths, 19% occur in public pools with a lifeguard present
For every one (1) drowning death, there are approximately four(4)
near-drowning accidents that require hopsitalization, with sustaining
serious brain damage.

Approximately 75% of child drownings occur because of a lapse of adult
supervision of 5 minutes.
African-American children between the ages of 5 and 19 are 2.6 times
more likely to drown than Caucasian children of the same age group (CDC,
2003)
And the most important fact....Drowning is preventable!! All it takes
is learning how to swim!!
